Britischer Orientalist 1862–1926, lehrte seit 1902 in Cambridge Arabistik. Bekannt für sein grundlegendes Werk über die persische Literatur und die Unterstützung der konstitutionellen Revolution in Iran 1905/9. Er verfasste zahlreiche Artikel und Bücher über die Bábí– und Bahai-Religionen. Bei einem Aufenthalt in Persien 1887/8 suchte er Kontakt zu den Bahai und den Azalí, 1890 besuchte er Mírzá Yaḥyá in Zypern und Baha’u’llah in Akko (‘Akká). Bei diesem Anlass entstand seine oft zitierte Beschreibung der Person Bahá’u’lláhs. In der Kontroverse zwischen den Bahai und den Azalí neigt Browne unverkennbar zur Azalí-Position. Dies wird in der Literatur zunehmend kritisch bewertet und nicht zuletzt auf Brownes politische Präferenzen zurückgeführt, dem der militante Nationalismus der Azalí weit näher stand als der irenische Universalismus der Bahai.
